CARE AND CLEANING
Natural materials age beautifully with proper care. Regular maintenance keeps your piece looking its best for years to come while allowing it to develop authentic character. Like all natural fibers, these rugs evolve with time - colors deepen, textures soften, and the material settles into its space.
What Makes Each Piece Unique:
- Hand-knotted, washed, and dried in Himalayan air - every finish done by hand
- Undyed materials vary naturally - samples show range rather than exact color
- Colors may shift slightly between dye batches
- Final dimensions may vary 2-5% from specifications
- Natural irregularities reflect authentic handcrafted character
Opening your Rug
Every rug undergoes meticulous quality inspection before shipping. Open your piece soon after arrival to prevent creases or pressure marks from being folded or rolled. Check for any transit damage immediately.
Avoid storing the rug without first unpacking and allowing it to breathe. If you need to store it for extended periods, consult the Storage section below.
After unpacking, let the rug rest in its intended space. The pile regains its original form naturally over the first few days. Initial fiber shedding during the first months is normal - regular vacuuming minimizes this natural process.
Place your rug in dry environments only. Avoid damp locations like bathrooms, basements, or outdoor areas where moisture compromises natural fibers.
Vacuum Frequently
Regular vacuuming maintains performance and enhances indoor air quality. Vacuum the top surface weekly using gentle suction. Occasionally vacuum the backside to prevent fiber damage from embedded dirt.
Newly purchased pieces shed fibers initially - this requires more frequent vacuuming but is completely normal, especially with high-pile rugs. The shedding decreases significantly after the first few months of use.
Protect from Other Flooring Equipment
Harsh cleaning equipment designed for hard surfaces can damage nearby rugs. Ensure floor cleaning tools and residues don't contact the rug - this prevents both physical damage and staining.
Manage Pressure Marks
Furniture weight or sharp edges create indentations in pile. Use protective pads between furniture and rug to prevent depressions.
When moving furniture on the rug, place cardboard or similar material underneath to distribute weight. Never drag furniture directly across the surface - this damages pile structure permanently.
To move the rug itself, remove all furniture first. Never pull from edges alone - lift and carry when possible, or roll carefully for transport.
Act Immediately
Address spots, stains, and spills immediately for best results. Most stains respond effectively to early treatment before they dry and set. Each natural fiber has unique characteristics - see the Fiber-Specific Care section below for specific guidance.
Basic Spot Cleaning
For small stains, start immediately with a dry white terry towel to blot away excess liquid or debris. Then, using a moist (not wet) cold white terry towel, gently blot the stain - never rub, which pushes the stain deeper into fibers.
If necessary, use diluted detergent specifically formulated for wool. Afterward, dry thoroughly with a clean cloth. Use minimal water - excess moisture decreases natural luster and can cause other issues.
If the stain persists after initial treatment, stop and consult a professional carpet cleaner rather than continuing. Never dry-clean natural fiber rugs.
Himalayan Wool
The texture of wool fibers provides natural resistance to soiling. Dirt stays high in the pile for easy vacuum removal. The natural lanolin coating prevents penetration by water-based liquids.
Wool's elasticity resists everyday wear and furniture marks. This durability means proper care yields decades of performance.
Cleaning wool stains: Follow the basic spot cleaning method above. The natural properties of Himalayan wool help resist most common household stains when addressed promptly.
Nepal Nettle
Nettle fiber offers exceptional durability with minimal shedding. Its firm texture withstands high-traffic areas better than wool while maintaining appearance over time.
Cleaning nettle stains: Nettle accepts darker colors better than light ones, making visible staining less common. Use the same gentle blotting technique described above, with particular attention to avoiding excess moisture.
When to Seek Expert Care
For large spills, persistent stains, or annual deep cleaning, professional carpet cleaning specialists provide the best results. Choose cleaners experienced with natural fiber rugs - not all carpet cleaning methods suit handmade pieces.
Professional cleaning maintains the rug's structural integrity and appearance. Schedule this periodically based on traffic levels and use patterns rather than waiting for visible soiling.
Burns
In some cases, carefully clipping blackened fiber ends with small, sharp scissors improves appearance. Trim surrounding fibers to minimize indentation visibility.
Remember: clipping is permanent. For wool-based products, burn marks often rub away to reveal original color. Professional assistance is always recommended for burn damage.
Pile Wear
Crushing and matting - loss of pile thickness and fiber intermingling - result from concentrated foot traffic and are not manufacturing defects. Regular vacuuming helps reduce these effects. For area rugs, rotate periodically to distribute wear evenly and maintain uniform patina. Improperly specified cushioning can also contribute to pile wear.
Fading and Color Loss
Protect rugs from direct sunlight to minimize fading. If exposed to sun, rotate the piece regularly to maintain even patina. Fading also results from heating fuel emissions or chemicals like pesticides, household cleaners, and other common products.
Soiling
Vacuum often and clean regularly before excessive soiling occurs. Dulling results from soil deposits that abrade fibers. Original color remains under the soil film - but if allowed to accumulate, removal becomes much more difficult. Frequent cleaning prevents this buildup.
Fiber Management
Initial shedding - fluff balls on the rug or in the vacuum - consists of loose fibers from production. This is normal and not detrimental to quality or lifespan. With proper vacuuming, shedding gradually disappears within the first months.
Occasionally yarn tufts rise above the pile surface (sprouting). Never pull these out - simply trim them level with surrounding pile using sharp scissors. For long runs, consult a professional who can often re-tuft or glue the yarn back into place.
Shading
Shading is visual variation from pile direction changes, making areas appear darker or lighter depending on viewing angle. More prevalent in solid-color cut-pile pieces than patterned styles. This characteristic is permanent, has no known cause, and is not a manufacturing defect.
Static Electricity
Static builds up more in low humidity, making it most bothersome during colder weather. Using a humidifier reduces static buildup and annoying shocks by maintaining appropriate moisture levels.
Storage
When storing long-term, roll the rug horizontally in a dry location. Never place anything on top. Never store vertically - this stresses the structure.
For extended storage, open and inspect regularly for moth or insect damage. Use insect repellent as preventative measure. A transpiring storage bag is available upon request - contact our sales department.
Two-Year Craftsmanship Warranty
Our warranty covers construction quality and material integrity. Natural variations in handmade pieces - including color variation, slight size differences, and organic texture changes - represent authentic character rather than defects.
Covered: Construction defects, material failure from manufacturing issues
Natural characteristics (not defects): Color variation up to 5%, size variation within tolerance, natural aging and patina development, fiber shedding during break-in period
Claims process: Document the issue with clear photos. Contact us with your order information and concern description. We'll assess and respond within 48 hours with next steps.
